another rerooting method - tutorial

This is a "pin vise." They were originally designed to hold drill bits, awls, tiny screwdriver heads, and other such things. This one is about 4" long without the tool head. It comes in multiple pieces.
From the left:
--> The handle
--> The collet, which holds the tool head, drill bit, awl point, et cetera
--> The tool head, in this case, the needle
--> The nut, which holds everything together.
A note about the needle: The very tip of the eye of the needle has been cut off with bolt cutters. This is where the yarn goes. The pointy part of the needle goes into the collet, with the open part of the needle accessible.

Clockwise, from top:
--> funky yarn threader tied on to a piece of ribbon so as not to get lost
--> #18 tapestry needle, with the very tip of the eye cut off with bolt cutters.
--> "Pin Vice" - basically, a hand-held drill. I got mine from Amazon for less than $10 about five years ago.
--> #18 tapestry needless. Anything bigger (#16) is too big to go through the holes, smaller than that (#20) is too small to get the yarn in.

Thread the yarn into the yarn threader,
then slide the yarn threader into the needle,
so that the yarn is in the needle.

Once the yarn is in the needle, poke the needle into a hole in the Cabbie skull. When you pull the needle out, a loop of yarn will stay in the skull. The friction of the yarn in the vinyl head will keep it there when the needle is pulled out.
If you are not comfortable with the secureness of the yarn, you can run another strand of yarn on the inside of the skull through the loops, then pull the yarn from the outside to tighten up the loops.
Glue also works wonders.
