more curly hair: Maryann

There must be something about curling acrylic "cornsilk" hair that I just don't understand. This is yet another attempt.

I tried using big orange perm rods or curlers of some kind, but when they are dipped in hot water, either the caps come off or the rubber anchors come off and it's a big mess.

What you see here is 3/8" polyethylene tubing that is designed to supply water to evaporative coolers. Fifty feet of it cost about $10. It's been cut with utility scissors into about 3" pieces, give or take half an inch.

A tuft of hair about the diameter of a pencil or slightly larger was wrapped around a "curler", then anchored with two tiny rubber bands in a figure-8.

Her curlers were then dunked in almost-boiling water for three minutes.

Now she's drying. Notice that her cute little curly bangs were carefully arranged so that they will stay curled as they were before this experiment. I tried very hard not to let them spend too much time in the hot water.

She dried for about 18 hours, then her curlers were removed. She was given a good shake, and her curls were pulled out from her head and released. No combing or brushing. This is the front view.

This is the back view.

This the the much-too-close side view:
