Talking Cabbage Patch Kids
An eBay lot of CPK Talkers arrived the other day.
My brother arrived last night.
Maybe not exactly a match made in Heaven, but it was pretty funny.
We took one Kid apart to see how she worked:
Her hair was horrific so I removed it with something of an eye for rerooting her. She has other issues - one eye is messy, her body is beyond repair, things like that. So she's bald.
Apparently, the original manufacturing process entailed inserting the mouth-moving mechanism through a hole in the skull, which was later fused closed. The skull fusion was visible until I cut it open again. We still couldn't get the head off so I also sliced the back of the skull to remove the mechanism.
The cream-colored foam stuff in the middle replaces the stuffing in the MM Kids. The square cutout is the back of the Kid and allows access to the battery compartment. The collection of holes goes on top of the speaker. Boy, is she LOUD without her foam!
The actual talking mechanism is on the right. We don't know what the two wires where her arms would be do since they were not attached to anything. The white thing that stands out from all the cream-colored things is the part that makes the mouth move. The part that kind of looks like an old telephone receiver is some kind of sensor that either tells her she's upside down / on her tummy OR that she's received her requested kiss.
We managed to satisfy her desire for her sippy cup with a magnet out of a disk drive. We couldn't find any other magnets that were strong enough!
The silver button towards the bottom of the torso mechanism is the tickle sensor.
