Lazy Person's Cabbie Panties

On the one hand, I don't like putting diapers on my softies. They don't ~look~ like babies, they should have underwear.

On the other hand, the choices of ready-made underwear to fit them is either "dolly panties" that are pretty expensive or underwear made for human children that is mostly too big.

And, have I mentioned that sewing is NOT my forte? That my sewing machine mostly hates me? That I can't see well enough to make sewing fun any more?

Here's my solution.

You need:
--> a piece of fabric. The long edge of the fabric needs to be 1.5 times around the target Kid's waist, the short edge needs to be from the belly button to the crotch plus AT LEAST 3 INCHES.

--> two pieces of elastic. The length of each piece of elastic is such that it goes around the waist minus 1 inch or so.

--> four safety pins. You could get away with four straight pins and a safety pin, but ~I~ would poke myself with that configuration.

You can see that I measured the fabric afterwards for those of you that want sizes. It's 26.5" by 10.5" for the Kid that needs bloomers - your measurements will vary.

Sew a casing for the elastic on each of the long sides. I sew by landmark so the first turn-under was the width of the sewing machine foot, and the second turn-under was....well, you can see that I used about 3" for the two casings together, so 3/4" for each turn-under.

String the elastic through each casing, pin the edge of the elastic flush with the raw edge of each casing.

Sew the center back seam, make sure you catch the elastic in the seam. Sew it twice, just in case. You never know what kind of gymnastics the Kid is going to perform!

Sew the crotch seam. I had to do this one by hand because my sewing machine balked. Note that you don't need much of a "shaped" crotch - it's not like there are any "gender bits" to worry about!

Ta-da! Panties! A little baggy but functional!
