pin-vise rerooting details - tutorial
I've had lots of questions on how to use a pin vise and a open-eyed needle for rerooting. This may not help much, but here's my best shot.
Tools I use:
--> Skein of yarn
--> This Kid will have a single pony, so you see a pile of yarn lengths.
--> Cabbie head - this one has the holes drilled to make things easier. This is not a required step.
--> Pin-vise setup
--> Funky yarn threader

Close-up of the pin-vise setup. The "tool head" in the pin vise is a #16 gold-eye needle with the tip of the eye cut off with a pair of bolt cutters.

Thread the yarn into the yarn threader at the middle of the length of yarn.

Thread the needle using the yarn threader. Gotta love the yarn threader - makes things SO much faster!

Remove the yarn threader, leaving the yarn in the needle.

Owie! Poke the needle into a hole in the Cabbie head...

...then pull it out. The friction between the yarn and the vinyl will keep the yarn in the head, but the smooth needle will pull out cleanly...

...leaving a loop inside the head.

Note that the loop inside the end is the same length as the distance between the inside of the eye of the needle and the end of the bolt on the pin vise. You are the one that determines the length of the loop when you decide how much needle sticks out of the pin vise. I like to use about an inch - it leaves a good solid loop inside the head.
At this point you can run a curved needle (threaded with stout thread or with yarn) through the loop inside the head, and tug on the hair to tighten up the stitch. Do the anchoring as you complete each loop.
Good luck!
