Easter Eggs 2010

This was the inspiration:

Mine aren't as pretty...I think WHAT FUN! I think MORE PRACTICE! I think EGG DYE ON CLEARANCE! I think EGG SALAD FOR DINNER ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS for the foreseeable future!

I boiled eighteen eggs, let them cool in the fridge until they were good and cold.

I used cheap egg dye from Wal-Mart, mixed each tablet with lemon juice until it dissolved, then added the prescribed half cup of water in each bowl.

Three eggs at a time were wrapped in a towel and cracked with a spoon so that there was a network of cracks. Each bowl of dye got three eggs, water was added to cover the eggs, and the bowls were put back in the fridge overnight.

This morning, I rinsed off the eggs and scrubbed them gently with a magic-eraser kind of thing. They aren't particularly beautiful:

I peeled one of each color to make egg salad for lunch. They still aren't particularly beautiful, but they are quite unique. I wonder if Dollar Tree has egg dye on clearance yet...

BarefootKitchenWitch used gel food coloring, but I have to admit that after my mom took a cake decorating class that involved VERY intense colors (and the associated BITTER and YUCK aftertaste), gel food coloring isn't right up there on my list of favorite things. However, it IS going on eggs, and eggs don't have a sweet taste to turn bitter, and eggs often get salted and peppered...I might have to try it.
